Fountain
aka Fountain format · Fountain screenplay format
A plain-text screenplay format — write in any text editor, convert to industry-formatted PDF/FDX. The open-standard alternative to Final Draft's proprietary FDX.
Fountain is what screenwriters reach for when they want to write in their text editor of choice rather than booting Final Draft. It's a plain-text markup convention — INT./EXT. headings, character names in caps, action in regular text — that any Fountain-compatible tool can render as industry-formatted screenplay. Highland, Slugline, and Fade In all speak Fountain natively. StoryboardCanvas Script imports and exports Fountain so a writer who lives in plain text never has to leave it to land in our suite.

Every fountain we generate stays linked to the rest of the project — change a scene heading and the fountain updates automatically. No re-import. No copy-paste. One project file from script to wrap.
